General information

  • Refrigerated shipping container used for the transportation and storage of temperature-sensitive cargo like pharmaceuticals or certain food products.
  • Longer-term cool or cold temperature storage in fixed locations is also possible in such a container.
  • The container is equipped with a generator and a refrigeration unit which control the temperature inside the container.
  • Temperature ranges are typically between 15° and 25°C (59° to 77°F) for controlled temperature goods, or between 2° and 8°C (36° to 46°F) for cold chain goods, but reefer containers are also used to transport frozen goods and some models are designed to maintain the temperature within as low as -65°C (-85°F).
  • Each container has a control unit allowing to set the desired temperature inside the container during shipping and is equipped with a data logger recording the evolution of these parameters.
  • To maintain the temperature at the chosen level, air is blown into the container underneath the cargo, through a slotted T-shaped aluminum floor. This air flows through and around the goods in the container, all the way to the back of the container, then returns above the cargo and is extracted below the container ceiling (air flow cycle).
  • The goods must be stowed in the container in a way that allows a consistent and uniform flow of air through the entire shipment: no uncovered free space left over the slotted T-floor, no goods beyond the end of the T-floor, cargo not higher than the top red load limit line, to allow free air suction at the container ceiling. Cargo must be stable on the floor and tightly wedged so it doesn’t shift inside the container during transport or allow for “chimney effect” of air moving between the cargo and therefore not completing the entire required air flow cycle.
  • Having two independent (redundant) refrigeration units installed on the container allows for increased reliability in case of failure in harsh conditions or isolated environments.
  • As the load is temperature-sensitive, a “Door Opening Alarm with Timer” is required to alert of any possible temperature control anomalies.
  • Request low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants to exclusively be used, chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) refrigerants are now banned as these are an important contributor to global warming.
  • As with any container, request an up-to-date Container Inspection and valid safety approval plate (CSC) from the shipper prior to validate the use of any reefer container.
