General information
A preservative used in biological products (e.g., biopsies, anatomical parts, in certain cases stools) as well as in the formaldehyde concentration technique, which is used for detecting parasites in stools.
The solution should never be used in its pure form; always make a 10% working solution (i.e., dilute the solution at 1:4 - 1 part formaldehyde to 3 parts water).
To transport biopsies use a 1:20 ratio between the biopsy’s volume and formol .
Note that formaldehyde does not preserve the mobile vegetative forms of parasites.
Use suitable containers (a screw cap is imperative) for storing, and particularly for transporting biopsies; protect the bottles or containers in double packaging.
