General information

Original ghee is a soft fat paste prepared out of milk cream.  It is comparable to melted butter.  The vegetable ghee we supply is a similar product made out of palm and soya bean oils.

Specifications vary with national regulations.  Here below, we give our most commonly used specifications.

- Refer to HQ when offered specifications different from our standard specifications.  It will need to be approved by a food specialist.

Importation of food is always subject to acceptance from the national authorities, based on their national specifications; check these before purchasing.

Impact on the local, national, or regional market availability and prices should be carefully looked at before purchasing large quantities.

Specifications

For all aspects of the product, unless described otherwise here below, the standard of Codex Alimentarius last edition applies, including the packaging.

- Product must be fit for human consumption and be of sound, fair and marketable quality.

- The Cartagena Protocol (Biosafety Protocol, additional to the Convention of Biodiversity) requires that exporters/producers indicate whether the food items may contain GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) or not.

- Check national specifications of recipient country.

Samples not taken by laboratory officials must remain in sealed original containers.

- Only laboratory officials can open containers and prepare mixed samples, or reduced samples.

- Minimum quantity of product for laboratory test is 1L.

- Sample containers to be unbreakable material (no glass).

 

- Product: Ghee

Moisture and volatile matters max.

0.1% by weight.

Free fatty acids calculated as oleic acid max.

- Primary packaging

In food grade PET (Polyethylene terephtalate) or metal bottles, hermetically sealed, of 4 to 5kg, according to the order.

Bottles to have caps with tamper-proof devices.

Impermeability: No leakage under the pressure of 6m-high stacking.

Impact tests to be carried out on multiple packs ready for supply.

 

- Secondary packaging

Tins to be packed in cartons of 4 units.

The carton of double corrugation, export quality, to withstand stacking 6m high for 6 months without deterioration.

The sealing of the outer box is with glue or 50mm tape, capable of resisting a tropical climate (humidity and sunshine) for six months.  Tape overlaps of 10cm minimum.

 

- Markings

Name of the product on tins and cartons.

Manufacture date on tins and cartons.

Expiry date on tins and cartons.

Manufacturer's name and address on tins and cartons.

 

- Minimum documentation required for quality assurance from the supplier.

To be established by an official body:

-       Certificate of inspection

-       Certificate of origin

-       Health Certificate or Phytosanitary Certificate

-       Weight and Quality Certificate

-       Non_radioactivity Certificate

-       Certificate stating whether GMOs may be included in the product

Other documentation needs to be provided according to the purchase agreement.
