Needle, intraosseous

General information

In life-threatening situations, intraosseous needles are used as an alternative for administering drug or fluid infusions to infants and children under 6 years of age.

Specifications

The intraosseous infusion needle is comprised of a blunt, round and open-ended cannula (needle) and a sharp trocar guide. (Dieckmann modification, intraosseous infusion needle)

Needle:

- Cannula     

 

- Made of stainless steel, plastic hub. 

 

- Distal tip: blunt, round with two laterally-opposed side ports (eye/hole) positioned near the tip end to ensure flow should the needle tip becomes obstructed by a posterior bone cortex.

 

- Positioning mark at 1cm proximal to the tip, used to visualize the depth level.

 

- Length 3cm, size G14.

 

- Hub at proximal end with circular base plate with plastic fins to anchor it and a Luer-lock connection (not on training needle).

Trocar guide with gripping handle:

- Material: trocar  made of stainless steel and plastic gripping handle.

 

- Patient end: sharp, triple bevelled 45° angle.

 

- Tubular device located inside the needle.

 

- Positioning mark at 1cm proximal to the tip, used to visualize the depth level.
