General information

Indications

Disinfection of infected wounds.

Disinfection of instruments, objects, equipment and linen.

Disinfection of floors and surfaces.

Large-scale water disinfection.

For household-level water treatment refer to NaDCC 8.5mg, 33mg, 67mg and 167mg.

Caution! Not all formulations are appropriate for cleaning wounds or for disinfecting drinking water.

Storage

Store in a dry well-ventilated place. Be sure containers are well sealed after each use.

Presentation

Effervescent tablets containing the indicated amount of sodium dichloroisocyanurate (also called NaDCC, sodium troclosene, or sodium dichloro-s-triazinetrione): these release a predetermined amount of chlorine when dissolved in water.

Solution strength is generally not expressed as an NaDCC concentration, but in terms of the content "of available chlorine"; this is expressed either as a percentage in parts per million (ppm), in g or mg per litre: 1ppm = 1mg/litre = 0.0001%.

One tablet containing 1.67g of NaDCC releases 1g of chlorine when it is dissolved in water. 1g of available chlorine per litre is expressed as 1g/litre, 0.1% or 1000ppm of available chlorine.

Unlike calcium hypochlorite, which is corrosive (solution pH is 14 to 16) and requires the addition of sodium bicarbonate to decrease its alkalinity, an NaDCC solution can be used on wounds because of its lower pH level: 6 to 7.

Usage

Disinfection of wounds:

1 tablet of 1g per litre: 1000ppm or 0.1% of available chlorine.

Disinfection or instruments:

1 tablet of 1g per litre: 1000ppm or 0.1% of available chlorine.

General disinfection:

- Clean conditions: 1 tablet of 1g per litre: 1000ppm or 0.1% of available chlorine (i.e., to clean surfaces, white linen, equipment, etc.).

- Medium clean conditions: 2 tablets of 1g per litre: 2000ppm or 0.2% of available chlorine (i.e., to clean floors, sinks, etc.).

- Dirty conditions: 5 tablets of 1g per litre: 5000ppm or 0.5% of available chlorine (i.e., to clean equipment soiled with blood, sputum, etc; and laboratory equipment, etc.). Wait a minimum of 15 minutes before rinsing.

- Blood spillage: 10 tablets of 1g per litre: 10,000ppm or 1% of available chlorine.

Drinking water disinfection:

1 tablet of 1g per 200 litres of clear water: 5mg/l or 5ppm of available chlorine.

1 tablet of 5g per 1000 litres of clear water: 5mg/l or 5ppm of available chlorine.

Allow contact for 30 minutes, at a minimum, before drinking.

For large-scale water treatment the use of calcium hypochlorite is recommended, unless transport constraints and prices are prohibitive.

Precautions

Do not swallow the tablets.

Avoid inhaling vapours and dust from the tablets during handling.

Do not expose the product to flames. Do not incinerate.

As a precaution, do not mix with detergents. Toxic chlorine gas can be released when mixed with some types of detergent. Only anionic detergents (i.e., soft soap) can safely be mixed with NaDCC solutions.

Do not mix with acid solutions (e.g., urine). This causes the release of toxic chlorine gas.

Prepare solutions with clean water in non-metallic containers, just prior to use, not in advance.

Toxicology information

Signs, symptoms and effects of exposure:

EYE: Exposure may cause severe irritation and/or chemical burns with corneal damage. Vision impairment is possible.

SKIN: Direct exposure can cause severe irritation and/or chemical burns. Chronic exposure effects are similar to those of direct exposure but with tissue destruction. Prolonged exposure to the skin can destroy the dermis and impair skin regeneration at the site of contact.

INGESTION: Ingestion can cause irritation and/or chemical burns to the gastrointestinal tract: characterized by nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, bleeding and ulceration. Chronic toxicity, via this route, is unlikely due to its corrosive nature.

INHALATION: Acute exposure may cause severe irritation to the respiratory tract, resulting in lung oedema, which can cause shortness of breath, wheezing, choking, chest pain and impaired lung function. Inhalation of high concentrations can result in permanent lung damage. Chronic exposure can cause impairment of lung function and permanent lung damage.

First Aid Measures

EYES: Immediately flush with large amounts of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Call a physician immediately.

SKIN: Immediately flush with water for at least 15 minutes. Call a physician. If clothing comes in contact with the product, the clothing should be removed immediately, and laundered before re-use.

INGESTION: Immediately drink large quantities of water. DO NOT induce vomiting. Call a physician immediately. DO NOT give anything by mouth if the person is unconscious or is having convulsions.

INHALATION: Move the victim to fresh air. Support respiration if needed. Call a physician.

Specifications

To ensure that the product is safe chemically, in the maximum dose, and that impurities and heavy metal contents are below maximum acceptable levels for the treatment of water intended for human consumption, the anhydrous sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) must be certified by NSF International (or a delegated authority) in compliance with NSF/ANSI standard 60. The regulations of EN 12931:2000 Standard must also be respected.
The effervescent base (etc.), used in addition to the NaDCC ,must be of pharmaceutical or food-grade quality.

Packaging

Packaged in a tamper-proof container of 200 tablets.
