Should be used when field conditions where organised food facilities are not available.
Designed to provide one meal three times per day (3,600kcal) as each meal provides approximately 1,200kcal.
Each MRE weighs approx 380-510g (13-18oz) depending on the menu.
General contents include: 2 different main courses high in starch, side dish, crackers, a cheese, peanut butter or jelly spread, a dessert or snack, powdered beverage mix, a condiment pack (coffee, creamer, sugar, salt, napkin, wet napkin, spoon), a plastic spoon and a flameless ration heater. There are over 25 different varieties.
Packaging requirements: capable of withstanding parachute drops from 380 m (1,250 feet), and non-parachute drops of 30 m (100 feet).
Minimum shelf life: 3.5 years at 27° C (80° F) or 9 months at 38° C (100° F); additionally, short-term temperature extremes of -51° C (-60° F) to 49° C (120° F) must be sustainable.
