   Household > Introduction

Household items such as kitchen sets, cleaning products, buckets, cloths, jerry cans and soap will often be required during an emergency.  They have an important role to play in preventing disease outbreaks and help those affected by conflict or disaster to carry out everyday requirements such as cooking, bathing, laundry and collecting water.

Some items are life saving, such as jerry cans for storing clean water, blankets in cold weather, mosquito nets for preventing malaria or soap for maintaining personal hygiene and prevent transmission of diarrhoeal diseases.

Other items contribute to enhance people's sense of dignity in difficult circumstances e.g. underwear, razors and toothbrushes and particularly significant for women and girls, access to appropriate menstrual cloths (or sanitary pads).
