General information

Edible iodized salt. Sodium chloride from the sea or from mines.

- Usual denominations: ‘Food grade salt’, ‘Cooking salt’, ‘Table salt’.

- Salt can be of various qualities, and prices can fluctuate significantly.

- Grey salt or raw salt are normally not supplied.

- Iodized salt is not the same as industrial salt.

- Specifications include the WHO recommended iodine content.

- Storage in a dry place is mandatory.

- The product must not contain Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), and be free from radioactive residues/elements. It cannot contain any substances originating from micro-organisms or any other poisonous or deleterious substances such as anti-nutritional factors, heavy metals, pesticide residues or toxins in amounts which may represent a hazard to health. Analysis of microbiological, chemical contaminant, toxins, heavy metals and pesticide residues must certify the product is “fit for human consumption”. The supplier shall submit related Lab reports / Declarations.

- Importation of food is always subject to acceptance by the national authorities, based on national specifications; check these before purchasing.

- Impact on the local, national, or regional market availability and prices should be carefully looked into before purchasing large quantities.

Specifications

For all aspects of the product, unless otherwise described below, the standard of Codex Alimentarius last edition applies, including the packaging.

Specifications vary with national regulations. Below you will find the most commonly used specifications for iodised salt.

Please refer to HQ whenever offered specifications differ from these standard specifications, as these will need to be approved by a food specialist prior to purchase.

The salt shall be white and 10g of salt in 100ml water shall give a colourless solution

Particle/grain size

100% of grains should pass a sieve of 1mm mesh

Moisture content

Between 0.1% maximum (dried at 110°C) and 0.5% maximum (dried at 140°C). See below “Additional country specific specifications”
