General information

Used by the UNHCR, ICRC and IFRC, the standard tent for a family of five conforms to the recommended minimum-standard living area for hot and temperate climates (3.5m² per person); it provides additional space for cold climates. As an addition, the Kit HSHETENF16I, Improved insulation for family tent, is recommended for cold climates.

The tent is not a long-term habitat solution. It is meant for emergencies. It has a minimum 1-year lifespan, irrespective of climate.

It has a minimum shelf-life of 5 years under normal warehousing conditions (in a dry, clean and ventilated warehouse - not in containers or tented warehouses - and stored on pallet racks or pallets elevated off the ground, not piled). The tent is vulnerable to rain and moisture when packed.

The tent design was developed by shelter specialists to ensure a product fit for human use, ensuring the minimum required outdoor lifespan in all climates, at minimum cost.

  • Generic design specifications ensure that the product can be manufactured in numerous countries by suppliers with standard technical know-how and standard tent-industry equipment.
  • To pre-select potential manufacturers, control for adherence to the primary material specifications listed below. The addresses of approved laboratories can be obtained from the IFRC secretariat or ICRC HQ.
  • Avoid using other types of tents or materials; they may have a shorter lifespan or other faults that are impossible to identify without going through a complete quality validation process.

Family tents are subject to international purchase frame agreements with validated manufacturers. Consult with the IFRC or ICRC prior to purchasing to obtain frame agreement information.

  • Validated manufacturers have had their samples laboratory-tested prior to the issuing of the frame agreement, and are subject to regular quality controls.
