General information

A pulse oximeter permits the continuous measurement of arterial oxygen saturation (%SpO2) as well as the pulse rate (beats/min). A non-invasive monitor, it employs a sensor placed on a finger, toe or an ear lobe.

A pulse oximeter is a microprocessor, it controls and determines arterial haemoglobin saturation (%SpO2) by measuring the absorption of red and infrared light passing through vascular tissue.

Changes in absorption caused by the pulsation of blood in the vascular bed are used to determine the arterial saturation and pulse rate.

Used for monitoring patients in Surgical Emergency Units, during anaesthetic and postoperatively.

Trained anaesthetic personnel are required to interpret readings. It will not work on a cold patient (peripheral vasoconstriction).
