General information

The “India Mark Hand pumps” were developed in India for lifting water from boreholes and dug wells, to overcome drawbacks of conventional shallow pumps and has been used successfully in different developing countries.

Technical criteria for pump selection:

  • The depth of well and specification of water.
  • The working hours and community size to which India Mark II shall cater.
  • The required flow rate.

The India Mark II is suitable for depths up to 50m, for boreholes with casing from 4” to 8” in diameter and for dug wells; with a 50mm cylinder (pump performance with depth setting at 45m: capacity 0.222 litre/stroke, output 800 litres/hour - based on 50-full-strokes/minute).

The India Mark II Extra Deep-well is suitable for boreholes up to 90m.

The India Mark III is suitable for depth up to 40m and is a further development where the diameter of the riser pipe is the same as that of the cylinder, thus allowing the pump rod, piston and foot valve to be pulled up for maintenance without the need to dismantle the riser pipe. It is suitable for depths up to 40m. It meets VLOM (village level operated maintenance) requirements. A larger pump cylinder, 63.5mm in ID, is available; it can deliver higher capacity at shallower settings. Optional cylinder requires 65mm riser main (pump performance with depth setting at 30m: capacity 0.375 litre/stroke, output 1125 litres/hour - based on 50-full-strokes/minute).

Stainless steel pump rods and riser are required for water with a pH>6.5 or an iron content>1 ppm.

A large-diameter suction tube reduces the sand intake into the cylinder.

Manual installation possible, special lifting gear may be required for depths of over 30m.
